Follow-up Visits

Unfortunately, we do not offer follow-up visits to all babies enrolled in the fetal MRI study due to lack of sufficient funding.

If your fetus has a condition known as Isolated Mild Ventriculomegaly, your child will be eligible for free non-invasive neurological and developmental exams at 1 year and 2.5 years of age.

If your fetus has a completely normal ultrasound and you are enrolling as a healthy volunteer for the fetal MRI, we may also ask that you bring in your child at 1 year of age for free non-invasive neurological and developmental exams.

These exams will begin with a developmental visit done by a child psychologist. This involves showing your baby toys and other items and doing small tasks to see if your baby is making the age-appropriate progress. Babies and toddlers have fun playing with blocks and puzzles during this part of the visit.

After the developmental visit, a child neurologist specialist will examine your baby’s general neurological status, e.g. assess your child’s muscle power, muscle tone, reflexes, standing, walking, finger movements, etc.

If your family is eligible for a follow-up visit, it will take place a the UCSF Parnassus campus. Upon entering the building through the front entrance, take the main elevator bank to your left up to the 6th floor. Just outside the elevator is a hallway where you will turn right. Slightly down this hallway is a waiting room where a study coordinator will meet you and introduce you to the doctors who will be conducting the visit. Please arrive 15-30 minutes before your appointment. Testing should take 1-2 hours. A parking permit will be mailed to you prior to your visit.
