Patrick McQuillen, M.D.

Pediatric intensive care specialist

Dr. Patrick McQuillen is a pediatric critical care specialist. His clinical interests focus upon pediatric neurologic and cardiac intensive care. Along with members of the division of child neurology, he is leading clinical research to demonstrate the feasibility of using advanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques and MR spectroscopy to assess brain injury in infants requiring cardiopulmonary bypass to correct congenital heart disease. This novel approach will guide future clinical trials of neuroprotective strategies for the prevention of brain injury associated with congenital heart disease.

He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical training at UCSD and his pediatric training at UCSF. He completed postdoctoral training in pediatric intensive care at UCSF and developmental neuroscience at UC Berkeley before joining the faculty in 1997 an assistant professor of pediatrics. He is a member of the Neonatal Brain Disorders Laboratory and maintains an active basic research program into the mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic cerebral injury during brain development.
