Program Overview
The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco is offering fellowships beginning July 2009. The program is designed primarily for individuals who have chosen, or are strongly considering, a career in academic interventional radiology.
The fellowship consists of training in a wide spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic vascular and non-vascular interventional studies (excluding neuroradiologic procedures). Vascular interventional procedures include peripheral, graft and renal artery angioplasty, stent placement, pulsed and infusion thrombolysis, IVC filter insertion, therapeutic embolization, TIPS placement, transvenous hepatic biopsy, vascular access insertion, and aortic stent grafts. Non-vascular interventional procedures include thoracic and abdominal biopsy, abscess and fluid drainage, percutaneous gastrostomy, percutaneous nephrostomy and tract dilation, transhepatic cholangiography and related procedures, biliary stent placement, gallstone manipulations, percutaneous cholecystostomy, tumor ablation, chest tube placement, and drainage of pulmonary and mediastinal fluid collections.
Procedures are performed at UCSF Medical Center, VA Medical Center, Mt. Zion and San Francisco General Hospital. Distinguishing features of the fellowship include:
- Balanced exposure to vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures by dedicated interventional faculty.
- One or two years of training with potential for clinical instructor position in second year.
- Dedicated time for laboratory or clinical research in a second year with
- access to two fully equipped and staffed research laboratories.
- Primary care of interventional patients through daily ward rounds and an
- Interventional Radiology Clinic.
- Flexibility to meet individual needs.
