Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation: UCSF’s Center for Molecular and Functional Imaging

In 2003, the Center for Molecular and Functional Imaging (CMFI) at China Basin Landing opened its doors with San Francisco’s first 3T MRI and two 1.5T clinical scanners, followed a few years later by a cyclotron which launched our in-house radiopharmaceutical program. Since then, the CMFI has been at the forefront of 3T research and major advances in theranostics and precision medicine. 

Harry K. Genant, MD (1942-2021)

We are writing with the news that our long-time colleague, mentor, teacher, and friend Harry K. Genant, MD, passed away peacefully at his home in Napa on January 14.

Rahul Desikan, MD, PhD (1978-2019)

It is with a very heavy heart that I write to share the sad news that Rahul Desikan, MD, PhD passed away after a 2 ½ year, hard-fought battle with a rapidly-progressive form of ALS.

Sarah J. Nelson, PhD (1954-2019)

Sarah J. Nelson, PhD, luminary imaging scientist, friend, and long-time faculty member in the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, passed away after a valiant struggle with cancer.

Randy Hawkins, MD, PhD (1949-2018)

Randall Hawkins, MD, PhD, friend and long-time faculty member in the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging has passed away unexpectedly.

Alexander R. Margulis, MD (1921-2018)

It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former Chairman and friend, Dr. Alexander Margulis. Alex, as he preferred to be called, was a global visionary leader of radiology, beloved by physicians at UCSF and throughout the world. He will certainly be missed.
