Michael Ohliger, MD, PhD Appointed Modality Director for MRI

Michael Ohliger, MD, PhD, will serve as Modality Director for MRI effective January 1, 2023The UC San Francisco Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging is pleased to announce that Michael Ohliger, MD, PhD, will serve as Modality Director for MRI effective January 1, 2023. Dr. Ohliger joined the department as an assistant professor in 2013, after completing his diagnostic radiology residency and abdominal imaging fellowship here at UCSF.

"Dr. Ohliger is a highly-regarded clinician and researcher; a top-notch educator and mentor; and compassionate advocate for our patients," says Christopher Hess, MD, PhD, UCSF Radiology chair.

As Modality Director, Dr. Ohliger will provide administrative and programmatic oversight of MRI operations, capital projects and quality and safety. As the UCSF Health system grows, a key aspect of this role is monitoring MR clinical volumes, anticipating demand and optimizing patient access to MR resources. To accomplish this, Dr. Ohliger will work with UCSF Health modality managers and department leadership to ensure that the MRI resources are aligned to provide excellent care for patients.

Dr. Ohliger has significant leadership experience at ZSFG, where he has served, since 2014, as Abdominal Imaging Section Chief and Site Director for the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship. In transitioning to Modality Director of MRI, Dr. Ohliger will leave open his role as Director of Research Operations for ZSFG general radiology.

"I extend my sincere thanks to Javier Villanueva-Meyer, MD, who has served as MRI Modality Director since 2021," says Dr. Hess. "Dr. Villanueva-Meyer was appointed Vice Chair, Quality and Technology in September 2022."

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ohliger on this new role!
