Solving the Mysteries of Back Pain, One Scan at a Time

If you’ve never experienced back pain, you’re one of the lucky few.

“Lower back pain is chronic today across all age groups,” says Sharmila Majumdar, PhD, a nationally recognized expert in osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and lower back pain. “There are no established therapies, in part because there isn’t a clear understanding of the tissues contributing to the pain.”

Because musculoskeletal degeneration can be a significant contributor to pain, Dr. Majumdar’s work includes viewing thousands of images to solve the mysteries of bone loss. She frequently works with vastly cross-disciplinary teams that include programmers, bioengineers, orthopedic surgeons, and rheumatologists.
