UCSF Radiology Welcomes Three New Faculty Members

We are excited to welcome three new faculty members to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.

With Dr. Kang Wang's background in MRI technology and Drs. Omar Hassan and Joelle Harwin's exceptional records of service and commitment, we look forward to nurturing their careers as clinicians, educators and researchers, confident that they will infuse UCSF and the broader radiology community with their leadership and expertise.

Kang Wang, MD, PhD

Kang Wang, MD, PhD

Dr. Wang brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team, having earned his PhD in biomedical engineering at Cornell University and his MD at UC San Diego. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at UC San Diego, followed by a prestigious body MRI fellowship at Stanford.

His dedication to the field is evident through his accolades, including the Resoundant Innovation Research Award from the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance, the RSNA Resident Research Award, and the Society of Abdominal Radiology Wylie J. Dodds Research Award. Dr. Wang has a strong background in developing quantitative imaging biomarkers for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and his work in automated CT and MRI liver segmentation and biometry is poised to make significant strides in liver disease diagnosis and monitoring.

Notably, Dr. Wang's commitment to service is evident in his role as the founding member and manager of the ultrasound clinic at UC San Diego Free Clinic and his involvement with the RAD-AID chapter at UC San Diego Health.

Omar Hassan, MD

Dr. Hassan's journey to UCSF has been marked by distinction, having earned his medical degree at Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, IL. He completed his general surgery internship, diagnostic radiology residency, and abdominal imaging and diagnostic sonography fellowship all within the UCSF family.

During his residency, Dr. Hassan made significant strides in improving patient care by leading the radiology section's quality improvement initiative at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. His efforts resulted in the implementation of systems to enhance the efficiency of radiology examinations, reflecting his commitment to excellence in healthcare.

Dr. Hassan is an integral part of the Cirrhosis & Hepatocellular Carcinoma Working Group, contributing to the establishment of a comprehensive database that is transforming the understanding of treatment modalities for HCC. His research in gender affirmation surgery and drug clearance is making important contributions to the field, with ongoing work on the imaging reliability of liver tumor grading.

Joelle Harwin, MD

Dr. Harwin is a medical graduate of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Harwin's journey includes an internship in internal medicine at the Virginia Mason Medical Center, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency and an abdominal imaging fellowship at UCSF.

Throughout her career, Dr. Harwin has demonstrated leadership and dedication through her roles as Chief Resident and her involvement in various committees, including Quality & Safety and Resident Recruitment. Her contributions extended to the UCSF Patient Experience Leadership Team, where she played a pivotal role in responding to the 2020 Cures Act and the Clinical Performance Improvement Committee. On a broader scale, Dr. Harwin's leadership extends to her roles at the state and national levels, where she served as President and Vice President of the California Radiological Society Residents and Fellows Section and earned the Young and Early Career Professional Society 2024 grant from the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Harwin's research has addressed diverse topics, including a multidisciplinary approach to cancer in pregnancy and liver imaging in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the American Roentgen Ray Society 2021 Certificate of Merit, highlighting her commitment to advancing radiology.
