Headshot of Thomas Link, MD, PhD, recently named a UCSF Health Exceptional PhysicianThe UC San Francisco Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging is pleased to announce that Thomas M. Link, MD, PhD, professor, chief of the Musculoskeletal Imaging Section and clinical director of the Musculoskeletal and Quantitative Imaging Research (MQIR) Group is a 2021-22 UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Award recipient.

“We are exceptionally proud of Dr. Thomas Link, for his recognition with the 2022 UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Award. He stands out as a world-class radiologist, a highly influential researcher and an exemplary educator for our residents and fellows,” says Christopher Hess, MD, PhD, chair of UCSF Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. “His impact is clearly evident every day in the high level of care for our patients, in the leadership of musculoskeletal imaging for UCSF, and in the field of Radiology for his constant pioneering of new and innovative techniques for probing musculoskeletal health.”

As chief of musculoskeletal imaging, Dr. Link has built an exceptional section with a diverse group of highly skilled physicians, who are experts in their field. The team has developed new clinical services improving patient care such as novel procedures to diagnose and treat bone tumors and imaging guided interventions. Dr. Link’s clinical expertise covers musculoskeletal disorders, and he has been privileged to work with a world class group of rheumatologists, orthopedic surgeons and endocrinologists providing the highest level of care for their patients.

According to Dr. Link his goals are to provide exceptional care for his patients and excellent service to his referring physicians. The joy of teaching and using imaging to explore and research musculoskeletal diseases to improve the lives of his patients keeps Dr. Link inspired. He shares that “these goals motivate me every day, even during the difficult days of the pandemic, and UCSF is a unique place to do this work.”

“UCSF Health physicians were nominated and selected based on their demonstration of our core values of PRIDE − Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence. These physicians have continued to provide outstanding care to our patients with grace, teamwork, and flexibility amid the many challenges we face during the pandemic.” says Josh Adler, MD, chief clinical officer at UCSF Health. “Their hard work, dedication and contribution is a testament to the exemplary relationships they have with faculty, staff and patients, and their steadfast commitment to providing outstanding care for our patients.  Please join me in congratulating them on their exceptional service.”

This year, there were over 100 Exceptional Physician Award nominee submissions. Dr. Adler thanks staff, physicians, students, and patients who contributed to the nomination process. There are 18 individual awardees this year, which is a modest increase from past years.  This was, in part, due to a response to a particularly large number of nominations, and to recognize exceptional service during a most difficult time.

Virtual presentations of these awards will occur on National Doctors’ Day, March 30th, 2022, a day to recognize physicians for their dedication and contributions to society and their community and for all that they do to put patients first. Congratulations to Dr. Link and all UCSF Health recipients.
