Leadership Opportunities

Resident Leadership opportunities

We believe in fostering the skills for our residents to become leaders in their field. We offer various opportunities that allow our trainees to develop essential skills in research, education, and administration. Our residents have the chance to engage in departmental committees, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and take on leadership roles within our residency program. We encourage residents to actively contribute to the advancement of radiology and healthcare, and we provide the necessary resources and mentorship to support their growth as leaders.

Committees

Residents take on leadership roles within various committees to drive the success and effectiveness of the residency program. They actively participate in decision-making, coordination, and implementation of strategies, working alongside faculty members and administrators. Their leadership roles involve organizing events, conducting evaluations, advocating for improvements, and fostering collaboration among peers.

  • Quality Assurance: Residents lead efforts to evaluate and enhance the standard of patient care, ensuring quality improvement initiatives are implemented effectively.
  • Curriculum: Residents actively contribute to shaping the educational experience, providing feedback, and proposing updates to the training program.
  • Social Life: Resident leaders plan and coordinate social events, creating opportunities for networking, camaraderie, and work-life balance.
  • Community Service: Residents take the lead in organizing and participating in community service activities, reflecting the program's commitment to giving back.
  • Informatics: Resident leaders explore and implement innovative technologies, promoting the use of informatics to optimize healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Quality and Safety: Residents spearhead initiatives to promote a culture of safety, conduct safety assessments, and implement quality improvement projects across all UCSF hospital systems.
  • Research: Resident leaders facilitate research opportunities, mentor peers, and promote scholarly activities within the residency program.
  • Recruitment: Residents actively participate in the recruitment process, assisting with applicant evaluations, interviews, and sharing their experiences to attract top talent.

Community Outreach

UCSF diagnostic radiology residents have a range of outreach programs available to them, aimed at making a positive impact in the community. They actively engage with local high schools, providing early exposure to radiology and inspiring students to consider careers in healthcare. The residents also participate in environmental initiatives such as beach cleanup events, promoting sustainability while having fun in the sun. Additionally, our residents have collaborated with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, trading in scrubs for hard hats and volunteering with a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity to build houses and improve the lives of those in need.

Teaching Opportunities

We offer various opportunities for residents to get involved with medical student teaching and mentorship.

Residents who express interest in teaching, are recruited to lecture for our didactic general radiology course to 4th year med students who are not pursuing Radiology. Residents also play an integral role in mentoring and guiding 3rd and 4th year medical students during their clinical Radiology rotation electives.

Additionally, the medical student education team recruits 1-2 residents each year for the Resident Liaison for Medical Student Teaching position, during the end of their R2 year, for a 2 year term. In this role, residents strategize with medical student education team about the direction of the medical student education program, work closely with the med student coordinator on scheduling logistics for various med student electives and activities, and serve as the resident director for the Diagnostic Apprenticeship elective for MS3s who are deciding upon their residency area.

We also host various panels and events each year for students in which residents are invited and encouraged to participate. These include but are not limited to: diversity/URM panel, women in radiology, LGBTQ+ panel, the Annual UCSF High School Outreach Conference, Career development sessions for summer interns, etc.

Lastly, our department sponsors a radiology near-peer mentorship program that brings together Medical Students at various levels of training with Radiology residents so they can get advice, mentorship and connection. Residents are recruited for this program on an annual basis as well.
