Resident Life

Resident life

Wellness

We value the well-being and work-life balance of our residents. We understand that residency can be challenging, and we strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where residents can thrive both personally and professionally. We offer a comprehensive resident wellness program that includes mentorship, counseling services, and social activities. San Francisco, with its vibrant culture, picturesque landscapes, and diverse culinary scene, provides an ideal backdrop for residents to enjoy their leisure time. From hiking in nearby national parks to exploring the city's renowned museums and entertainment venues, residents have ample opportunities to unwind and create lasting memories.

A Day in the Life

A resident’s day typically starts with 8 am morning conference, which is a protected time we receive every day for our learning. At 9 am, we head to the reading room to start our work day, converting overnight preliminary reports from our hardworking on-call residents into full reports and reading out with the attending. We also review new incoming studies, field phone calls from other services, and perform some procedures throughout the day.  At 12 pm, we head to noon conference for lunch and more learning. At 1 pm, we head back to the reading room to finish out the rest of the day. The normal work day ends at 5 pm. Afterwards some of us head to our evening call shifts until 8 pm, when the overnight resident starts, or our moonlighting contrast reaction shifts.

Socials

The residency holds social events about once a month. These range from post-work happy hours to our annual holiday party. Other group events and activities we’ve done in the past include hiking in Marin, arcade games, visiting a pumpkin patch in Half Moon Bay, and having a bonfire on Ocean Beach! This past year we also had a joint mixer with the Emergency Medicine residents. There are also many informal social gatherings- the past couple of years, the R1 class has gone on a group ski trip to Lake Tahoe together. We are always thinking of fun and new ways to enjoy our time outside the reading room!

Living in San Francisco

San Francisco is a charming and vibrant city! There are many delicious restaurants and bars to explore from the classic Mission burrito to Michelin-starred eats, beautiful parks throughout the city (Golden Gate Park is my favorite), scenic beaches, and cool museums. Many museums offer free admission on specific days for city residents. Fun annual events in the city include Bay to Breakers, Fleet Week, Outside Lands Music Festival, Corgi Con, and Pride! The surrounding nature is also top notch; from a quick 30 min drive to a couple hours you can see some world-renowned views including Big Sur, Muir Woods, Marin Headlands, Point Reyes National Seashore, and many more! Once you drive a little farther, you can visit Lake Tahoe or multiple national parks including Yosemite, Pinnacles, King’s Canyon, Lassen Volcanic, and Redwoods.

After Residency

In recent years, all of our graduating residents have entered fellowship programs of their choice, with most electing to stay at UCSF for subspecialty training. Alumni from our program can be found in a wide variety of academic and private practices throughout the country.  Most maintain strong ties to UCSF and its trainees, either through The Margulis Society or the deep professional and personal relationships that develop during training.
