Pediatric Radiology

The Pediatric Radiology Section at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital offers children some of the most advanced imaging studies interpreted by world-recognized experts.  We provide outstanding diagnostic service at the lowest possible radiation exposure for each child, and when possible, imaging is performed without radiation.

The pediatric imaging faculty is headed by John MacKenzie, MD, Chief of Pediatric Radiology, and dual fellowship trained in both pediatric imaging and musculoskeletal imaging. Jesse Courtier, MD is an expert in pediatric abdominal imaging and adds a new dimension to pediatric imaging with his dual fellowship training in both pediatric and abdominal imaging.  Andrew Phelps, MD recently joined our group after residency training at UCSF (Chief resident) and fellowship training in pediatric radiology at Boston Children's Hospital.  Subspecialist radiologists who focus on the diseases unique to the brain and heart also provide pediatric imaging at UCSF.

We pride ourselves in the collaborations between our section and our referring physicians. The Pediatric Radiology section provides clinical consultation on a daily basis for physicians who care for children at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. We provide expertise on the interpretation of imaging and place them in clinical contex during several weekly conferences, e.g.pediatric oncology tumor board, pediatric surgery group meeting, and pediatric orthopedic pre- and post-op conference.  We give weekday conferences for the NICU, PICU, and ward teams and for medical students and residents. We hold monthly image interpretation sessions with pediatric urology and pediatric rheumatology.

Pediatric Radiology faculty members are active in ongoing departmental, university, and society committees and contribute as speakers and reviewers for national and international societies.  The Pediatric Radiology faculty are recognized for their excellence in pediatric imaging from the local to international level.
