A recent collaborative project of the five University of California radiology departments – UC Davis, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC San Francisco – highlights some of the new and ongoing DEI work our people are leading in our profession and across our departments and health systems. We invite you to read our Summer 2021 newsletter Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in UC Radiology to learn more about these efforts.

Some highlights of the newsletter include:

  • A personal reflection on leadership during crisis as a catalyst for change from Shadi Aminololama-Shakeri, MD, Chief of Breast Imaging at UC Davis
  • How a machine learning team from UC Irvine led by Peter Chang, MD, and Daniel Chow, MD, MBA, Co-Directors at the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine (CAIDM), contributes to identifying the pandemic’s most vulnerable patients
  • Practical guidance on starting a journal club to understand and dismantle structural racism in academic medicine, with resources compiled by Dorathy Tamayo-Murrillo, MD, Isabel Newton, MD, PhD, and Peter Abraham, MD, MAS at UC San Diego
  • Ambitious goals for a new Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee at UCLA led by Kathleen Brown, MD, FACR
  • RADWomenUCSF, a new initiative to advocate for women trainees, staff, and faculty in radiology spearheaded by Kimberly Kallianos, MD, Priyanka Jha, MBBS and Christine Glastonbury, MBBS

We are immensely proud of these accomplishments and recognize that creating a more equitable and inclusive profession is a continuous “work-in-progress.” Please follow along as our DEI journey proceeds by visiting the DEI pages of each UC Radiology department to learn more:
