William P. Dillon, MD

William P. Dillon, MD, is Chief of Neuroradiology, and Executive Vice-Chair of the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. Dr. Dillon, board-certified in both neuroradiology and diagnostic radiology, is recognized as an international leader in neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, functional MRI imaging and spine intervention. He is past-president of the American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology. He has written over 250 peer reviewed articles as well as several textbooks.  The American Society of Head and Neck Radiology has given its highest award, the Gold Medal, to Dr. Dillon.  He has also been named one of the Best Doctors in America® for the last dozen years and in 2011 received the J. Elliott Royer, M.D. award for contributions to academic neurology at UCSF.

Barkovich, A. James M.D.

A. James Barkovich, MD, leads the pediatric neuroradiology section of UCSF neuroradiology.  Dr. Barkovich has focused on pediatric neuroradiology for the past 25 years. He was the Founding President of the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology, former President of the American Society of Neuroradiology, former Secretary-General of the World Federation of Neuroradiology Societies and former Chairman of the Board of the Neuroradiology Education and Research Foundation. He is the author of Pediatric Neuroimaging, the definitive textbook of pediatric neuroradiology.  Dr. Barkovich has received Gold Medals from the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology and from the American Society of Neuroradiology, which recognize both his exceptional service and achievement in the field of Neuroradiology.  He has been awarded the Outstanding Lifetime Research Award of the American Society of Neuroradiology for his research in pediatric neuroradiology and the RSNA Outstanding Research Award.

soonmee cha, MD Soonmee Cha, MD, is Professor of Radiology and Neurological Surgery at UCSF and serves as the Program Director for the UCSF Radiology Residency Program.  Dr. Cha has focused on the importance of validating the usefulness of MRI as a tool for brain tumor diagnosis and monitoring and identifying therapy endpoints.  With involvement in multiple clinical trials, Dr. Cha's current imaging research emphasizes validating physiologic MRI variables by directly correlating them with histopathologic findings of the tumor specimen obtained through image-guided stereotactic biopsy. She is a superb clinician and teacher, as well, and was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Teaching award in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.
Chin, Cynthia T. M.D.

Cynthia Chin, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at UCSF, is an expert in CT-guided spine injections and is the Director of the UCSF Precision Spine and Peripheral Nerve Center. Dr. Chin has received many distinguished awards, including 2011 Best Doctor in America, 2010 America's Top Radiologists, and 2007 and 2010 nominations for the UCSF Medical Center Exceptional Physician Award.  Dr. Chin’s research in advanced imaging of the spine and nerves and the latest techniques in spine interventions for patient treatment has brought relief to many patients. Dedicated to optimizing patient safety, Dr. Chin currently chairs the department’s Radiation Safety Committee and serves on the MRI Safety Committee. 

Alisa D. Gean, M.D.

Alisa D. Gean, MD, is a Professor of Radiology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery at UCSF, where she joined the faculty in 1989 as the Chief of Neuroradiology at San Francisco General Hospital. She is currently a senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and is also an examiner for the American Board of Radiology.  Dr. Gean’s primary professional interests include central nervous system trauma, stroke, and HIV disease. She lectures nationally and internationally on traumatic brain injury and is a founding member of the Brain and Spine Injury Center (BASIC) at UCSF. Dr. Gean has written extensively on the topic of head injury and is the sole author of the internationally recognized textbook, Imaging of Head Trauma.

Christine Glastonbury, M.B.B.S.

Christine Glastonbury, MBBS, is Professor of Radiology, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and Radiation Oncology at UCSF.  Dr. Glastonbury has focused on advancing imaging for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with head and neck cancer.  Dr. Glastonbury is co-author of several textbooks on Head and Neck radiology and is Editor-in-Chief of a the textbook Head and Neck Cancer, for publication November 2012.  She is a renowned national and international lecturer in Neuroradiology and has received Radiology and Otolaryngology resident teaching awards and the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators Excellence in Teaching Award.  Dr. Glastonbury is Director of the neuroradiology fellowship program at UCSF.

Orit A. Glenn, M.D. Orit Glenn, MD, is Associate Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at UCSF.  Dr. Glenn has special expertise in fetal MRI. As a member of the Fetal MR Neuroimaging Program, she collaborates with obstetricians, perinatologists, child neurologists, geneticists, pediatric neurosurgeons, fetal treatment surgeons, and neonatologists. The program also involves strong collaborative efforts with magnetic resonance scientists to develop improved fetal magnetic resonance techniques, such as generating 3D high-resolution images, fetal diffusion weighted imaging, and fetal diffusion tensor imaging.  These techniques will allow for the study of changes in brain morphometry as well as changes in the microstructure of white matter and are expected to increase understanding of the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders.
Hess, Christopher, M.D.

Christopher Hess, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Radiology at UCSF and Bioengineering and Chief of Neuroradiology at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His interests include high MR field imaging of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and frontotemporal dementia, epilepsy, vascular anomalies, and spine interventional procedures. Dr. Hess's primary research is in using MRI to assess neurological diseases of primary or secondary neurodegeneration, including dementia (Alzheimer's disease), movement disorders (Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes), and epilepsy. His lab aims to develop and apply new techniques for using diffusion MRI and ultra-high field 7T MRI to better diagnose these disorders and monitor their treatment. Dr. Hess is also actively involved in research on vascular birthmarks, particularly in regards to the neurocutaneous disorder PHACE syndrome.

Pratik Mukherjee, M.D., Ph.D.

Pratik Mukherjee, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Radiology and Bioengineering and an attending neuroradiologist at UCSF. Dr. Mukherjee is an expert in advanced pediatric neuroimaging and clinical applications of magnetic resonance diffusion and perfusion imaging and traumatic brain injury. He has special expertise in functional MR imaging (fMRI), diffusion and perfusion imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging of traumatic brain injury.

Uzelac, Alina M.D.

Alina Uzelac, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Neuroradiology at San Francisco General Hospital.  Her interests include acquired toxic and metabolic encephalopathy, spine interventional procedures and traumatic spine and brain injury.

David Wilson, M.D., Ph.D.

David M. Wilson, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at UCSF.  His interests and expertise include MR spectroscopy, brain tumors, and positron emission tomography (PET). Dr. Wilson's  primary research is in the development of new molecular imaging biomarkers for cancer detection and characterization, employing hyperpolarized 13C MR spectroscopy and PET, for improved evaluation of tumors and other disorders with underlying metabolic abnormalities. In particular, he has been developing techniques for in vivo characterization of redox potential and applying them to intracranial tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, and drug treatment models.

Esther Yuh, MD, PhD

Esther Yuh, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor within the neuroradiology at UCSF. Her interests include image-guided spine interventions, computer-aided detection, and head trauma.  Following the conclusion of a diagnostic radiology residency at UCSF, she completed a clinical fellowship in neuroradiology at UCSF.  Dr. Yuh has received several honors, including the General Electric Association of University Radiologists Research Academic Fellowship, UCSF Department of Radiology's Outstanding Teaching Fellow and nomination for UCSF Medical Center's Exceptional Physician Award.
